Gastronomic Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of Europe’s top gourmet capitals and home to New Nordic Cuisine. The city also has Scandinavia’s largest twice-annual culinary festival and has a buzzing bistro and slow food scene.
GOURMET RESTAURANTS
Copenhagen has no shortage of gourmet restaurants, many of which are known for their New Nordic Cuisine and unique culinary style, including the city’s famous restaurant Noma, voted the World’s Best Restaurant.
COPENHAGEN COOKING
Copenhagen hosts Scandinavia’s largest twice-annual culinary festival, Copenhagen Cooking with tasting events and street markets citywide (September and February). The February edition is featured as part of the city’s Wondercool Festival, which includes art, music and fashion events.
CULINARY MARKETS
Copenhagen boats a covered food market, Torvehallerne, with artisanal stores and food bars. Show cooking and outdoor jazz is featured on weekends. Located next to Nørreport Station. There is also a floating fish market complete with a seafood café (Havnegade) on the way.
ORGANIC RESTAURANTS
Many Copenhagen restaurants offer organic cuisine made with certified produce from sustainable farming. Try organic open-faced sandwiches at Aamanns – or an organic hotdog from the vending cart by the Round Tower.
FAMILY RESTAURANTS
Copenhagen is a city with many young families. Restaurants and cafés offer children’s menus and many also have highchairs. Restaurant SULT at Cinemateket serves family-friendly weekend brunch and offers free children’s movies on weekends.
BUDGET SLOW FOOD
Copenhagen is home to a whole new breed of takeaway joints serving quality slow food for under DKK 70. Many also offer limited indoor and outdoor seating, such as Kødbyens Deli, Annes Gademad, Madglad (Vesterbro), Grød, Bust (Nørrebro) and Gyhrs&Niller (Østerbro). The city also has a wide choice of bistros serving 2-course meals including beverages for around DKK 350.
GROUP DINING
Most Copenhagen restaurants and bistros accept groups of up to 20-30 diners on prior arrangement. For fine dining at reasonable prices, Nimb Brasserie in Tivoli Gardens accepts groups of up to 100 diners. For quality bistro dining, Cofoco offers a number of eateries citywide seating groups of 20-30 diners.
THE MEATPACKING DISTRICT
Today, the Meatpacking District in Vesterbro is one of Copenhagen’s most popular places to go out.
The Meatpacking District used to be home to Copenhagen’s meat industry businesses and still consists of three separate areas, referred to as the White, Grey and Brown "Meat City" for the dominant colour of their buildings. In recent years, it has changed into a new creative cluster with a trendy nightlife and a broad range of high quality restaurants.
